Urban Geography
Five Largest Cities: Kabul, Herat, Kandahar, Mazar-e Sharif, Jalalabad
Largest city population: 3,414,100
Population of 2nd to 5th largest cities (Rank Size Rule): Herat (1,707,050), Kandahar (1,138,033), Mazar-e Sharif (853,525), Jalalabad (682,820)
Actual populations of 2nd to 5th Largest cities: Herat (449,600), Kandahar (409,700), Mazar-e Sharif (379,300), Jalalabad (212,900)
Validity of Rank Size in Country: The Rank Size Rule does not show validity in Afghanistan. The proof is that the five major cities population estimation based on the rank size rule is much higher, almost two or three times larger than the actual population in these cities. Such as Herat the second largest city in Afghanistan with a population of 449,600 but the rank size rule estimation shows that it should be roughly 1,707,050 people. This proves that the rank size rule is not valid in Afghanistan showing that it is not similar to more developed countries in the urban population density
